At the Crossroads: Food in an Age of Uncertainty

22nd April,2026 Download

Food systems are entering a period of profound disruption and possibility. This report explores how artificial intelligence and other technological breakthroughs, climate volatility, demographic change, shifting consumer health and nutrition needs, and geopolitical fracture are reshaping how food is produced, traded and consumed.

Developed by Systemiq in partnership with the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the report examines what rising global uncertainty means for the future of food systems, and how leaders can respond.

Drawing on a year-long futures thinking and foresight effort, including a January 2026 symposium in Zurich with more than 70 leaders from civil society, academia, intergovernmental organisations, business, finance and philanthropy, it explores plausible futures for food systems and highlights practical areas where coordinated action can begin now.

For leaders across food, agriculture, finance, philanthropy and policy, the report offers a valuable resource for understanding systemic risk, testing assumptions and identifying where collaboration is most needed. It is designed for those working to strengthen food security, resilience, affordability and environmental sustainability in an increasingly fragmented world.
