Janez joined SYSTEMIQ to combine his experiences from public life with some of the best experts from the private advisory field. Mission: scaling system change with purpose. He has introduced resource efficiency and circular economy concepts in the European policy. Logically also in SYSTEMIQ he is focusing on those areas with an aim to combine them with the rest of SYSTEMIQ priorities. Janez likes volleyball and hiking with family and friends. He is also a coach of the SYSTEMIQ volleyball team playing in Slovenia.

He graduated at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Ljubljana where he received also his Master's and a Ph.D.

Janez was Director of the Institute of Macroeconomic Analysis and Development of the Republic of Slovenia, he headed Negotiating Team for Accession of the Republic of Slovenia to the European Union and was also a Minister responsible for European Affairs. Janez became a Member of the European Commission on May 2004. First mandate (2004-09) he was responsible for the Science and Research and second (1020-14) for the Environment. Currently he is Co-Chairing UN International Resource Panel, he is also a Chairman of The Forum for the Future of Agriculture and of the RISE foundation.  

He received three honorary Doctor degrees (London Imperial College, Ghent University and Aalto University). Among others he was awarded the United Nations' 2013 Champions of the Earth Award, the ACER Award for the visionary contributions and leadership that made possible the ERC, the Twelve stars for promoting environmental sustainability by the EEB and Circulars 2015 by WEF for the leadership in circular economy area.
