Regenerative systems can accelerate economic development and safeguard the planet.

Understanding the true value of our ecosystems, and how they ensure our quality of life, is the key to conserving them.

Some of the most vulnerable environments on earth are also the most valuable. Carbon-rich areas like peatlands and tropical forests have a crucial role in containing greenhouse gases and slowing biodiversity loss. Tropical ecosystems are also vital to the world economy and our quality of life. They help maintain the planet’s vital functions, like pollination and rainfall patterns, far beyond the regions themselves – the dieback of the Amazon rainforest would cause droughts not only in the wheatfields of Brazil, but in the American Midwest.

people depend on forests for their livelihoods. All of us depend on their ecosystems.

The world is increasingly talking about sustainability. We go further. Regeneration business models are designed to restore, renew or revitalize, creating systems that manage the social and economic needs of society and conserve the integrity of nature.

Enhancing natural systems

SYSTEMIQ is driving economic projects and policy initiatives that can not only reduce tropical deforestation, but also enhance natural systems, from savannahs or temperate agricultural soils to wetlands and marine biomes.

Through Partnership for Forests, we accelerate businesses that preserve and enhance ecosystems: we develop the business case for forest protection, then help to bring this to a commercial scale – for example, by securing third-party investment. Our work with global commodity value chains includes supporting palm oil companies and governments to deliver on deforestation-free palm production in Indonesia and across Africa. We also incubate community-based forest enterprises to preserve tropical forest in Asia, West Africa and Latin America. Producing premium foods – from foraged honey to coffee – can help local people raise standards of living, while securing their land rights and creating frontier zones that protect the forest beyond.

But our natural solutions projects reach far further. Our work on climate-friendly products helps create the market conditions for institutions that conserve forests and thereby create environmental benefits on a greater scale. We link this to our work in the energy and industrial sectors, to help our partners introduce climate-friendly products to global consumers, educating them about the value of our vulnerable ecosystems.

There is more than £2 trillion in economic opportunities linked to sustainable food and land use systems alone. To unlock these opportunities, SYSTEMIQ works with thought-leaders like the Food and Land Use Coalition, policy-makers and national governments, as well as businesses and local communities. Our aim is to accelerate the changes needed in policies and business models that deliver regenerative economic approaches and enables us to discover and deliver groundbreaking products to market.

Our vision for regenerative ocean systems links closely to our work on materials.
