Meera atreya, phd
Meera is deeply passionate about sustainability and alleviating climate change. She joined SYSTEMIQ to make a positive impact on society and the planet by combining her science and consulting expertise.
Before joining SYSTEMIQ, Meera was a management consultant and Global Social Responsibility Fellow at McKinsey & Company, where she was also designated by McKinsey’s Sustainability Practice as an Affiliate Expert in Renewable Energy & Cleantech. Meera provided strategic solutions for public and private sector clients and helped develop the environmental footprint strategy for the organisation globally, resulting in their now carbon-neutral status and commitment to using 100% renewable electricity. Prior to consulting, Meera spent 10 years doing scientific research.
Meera earned an A.B. cum laude from Harvard and a Ph.D. in Chemistry (Chemical Biology) from the University of California, Berkeley in 2015. She was awarded a Hoopes prize for her undergraduate thesis towards developing a gene therapy to prevent HIV infection, and a National Science Foundation fellowship for her graduate research on bio-energy. The focus of her Ph.D. was on engineering enzymes to improve the efficiency, and lower the cost, of converting cellulosic biomass to 2nd-generation biofuels.
In her free time, Meera enjoys being in nature and keeping physically active (especially by hiking), cooking, dancing, and eating hummus.
