Supporting local communities, reducing deforestation and conserving biodiversity across Indonesia.

600

million hectares of tropical forest is at risk worldwide

Many communities rely on forests for their livelihoods and will work to protect them wherever possible. The Multistakeholder Forestry Programme (MFP4) supports businesses that are established and managed by local communities. These businesses will improve community prosperity and at the same time reduce forest degradation and deforestation. SYSTEMIQ, and its partners, connect three core stakeholders – communities, the private sector and public bodies – to support these Community-Based Forest Enterprises (CBFEs).

Core to this work is providing CBFEs with access to strategically placed businesses that can connect them to multinational retailers and wholesale companies. Providing access to these ‘Market Access Players’ (MAPs) ensures the high-quality products will reach wider markets and the value will be returned to the communities. By supporting theses MAPs we can dramatically accelerate a transformation in economic models and scale up the work being done.

MFP4 does this by providing seed funding, advising on business strategy and securing vital access to larger businesses that buy products from local communities.

We also work to ensure that the enabling conditions (regulation, access to information, finance etc.) support the increase in scope and scale of these community businesses across Indonesia.
