Frontline action to stop plastic marine pollution by building sustainable waste systems.

450000

With two more cities in 2020, Project STOP will reach 450,000 people

Eight to thirteen million tonnes of plastics enter our oceans every year- half of which comes from Southeast Asia. Economic growth in these countries has increased consumption of plastics beyond the capacity of local waste management systems.

Launched in 2017 by SYSTEMIQ and Borealis, Project STOP partners with industry including Nestle, Nova Chemicals, Borouge, Schwartz Group, Veolia, SWI, as well as the governments of Indonesia and Norway to build effective and more circular waste management systems that end leakage of plastics into the environment, increase resource efficiency and provide benefits for local communities.

Details

Working closely with the community and local leaders, Project STOP aims to achieve three key objectives:

  1. achieve zero leakage of waste into the environment
  2. recycle more plastics
  3. create benefits for the local community

The first city partnership was launched in April 2018 in Muncar, a coastal area located in East Java, Indonesia.

SYSTEMIQ works with its partners to secure additional funding and design new initiatives to add value to Project STOP to make it sustainable and replicable in the future.
