International Report Highlights Environmental, Economic Costs of Single-Use Plastics in Healthcare Sector<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Without action, annual plastic waste volumes and greenhouse gas emissions could rise by <\/span><\/i>35-40%<\/span><\/i> by 2040, pushing costs for hospitals and health systems in Europe and North America up to over $76 billion per year.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

New York, 10th September 2025 <\/span><\/b>\u2013 A new report from global sustainability consultancies <\/span>Systemiq<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Eunomia<\/span><\/a> warns that the healthcare sector\u2019s dependence on single-use plastics is driving up costs, waste, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across Europe and North America \u2013 but also shows that proven solutions can deliver dramatic reductions. Released ahead of Climate Week NYC and following the UN Plastics Treaty negotiations in Geneva, the findings highlight the urgent need to bring healthcare further into global discussions on plastics, climate, and health.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2023 alone, healthcare in the two regions generated 2.1 million tonnes of single-use plastic waste, creating 9.3 million tonnes of CO<\/span>\u2082<\/span>e emissions and costing health systems close to $56 billion.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
