Negotiations for the international, legally binding instrument on plastic pollution will reach a critical point next week.

Our latest contributions to the treaty process include the release of new studies and digital tools. You can use these to help navigate the economic, environmental, and social implications of different treaty options.

We’ll be in Ottawa during the treaty negotiations – why not connect with us there?

Plastic Treaty Futures

‘Plastic Treaty Futures’ is a free resource which comprehensively analyses four scenarios for the plastic treaty.

The aim is to support country negotiators in assessing the environmental, economic, and social impacts of the policies under discussion. It shows that only a scenario that combines a comprehensive, globally coordinated approach with action across the full plastic lifecycle can achieve a significant reduction in plastic pollution, whilst also offering important economic benefits across all regions.

You can explore the Briefing for Negotiators report now. Two free online tools to dive into insights at a regional level or develop custom scenarios will be made available in the coming days.

Explore Plastic Treaty Futures

We will share key findings from Plastic Treaty Futures at in-person events at INC-4 on 23rd April from 1-3pm at the Westin Hotel Ottawa, and on 25th April from 1:30-2:30pm at Canada’s Plastic Action Zone.

A living income for the informal waste sector

Developed by the Fair Circularity Initiative and Systemiq, ‘A Living Income for the Informal Waste Sector’ presents a methodology for assessing the living income of informal waste pickers in the context of the global plastic treaty. The study outlines the concept of living income in the context of informal waste pickers, provides a practical methodology to evaluate waste pickers’ earnings versus a living income and offers insights from case studies in locations of Brazil, Ghana and India.

It also provides recommendations for the UN Plastics Treaty, local policy makers and companies to tackle the issues of a living income and enable a just transition.
